Compulsion will assist student learning

Islamic and Asian Civilization Studies, or TITAS, of course, could be forced to students in private universities in Malaysia was announced that he caused great controversy.

Public universities in Malaysia are authorized to teach the students all Titans. Private universities more autonomy to extend the move higher was tense as the score.

(With the exception of Western part), reflecting Malaysia's ethnic configuration - TITAS about Islam, Malay, Indian, Chinese and Western culture that teaches a course. It is intended to cover high school that - content "talking about how we got here, have a history.

Surprisingly, some opposition members, such as mercury Raid Ramble subdued but clear lead in multi-ethnic Malaysia move supported the need for more cross-cultural understanding.

Ironically, Titans forced the politicians to support the implementation of those who have studied in the West - was forced to courses other than the ones that are integral to a degree, it's unheard of.

To what extent is the private higher institutions to intervene in this case is important because TITAS discussions.

Foreign students - including - even if the government forced all students on campus at the University of Nottingham in Malaysia have the authority to force private universities, to this course, and perhaps more importantly, the student will erode the autonomy of private institutions.

Such a threat to the freedom and probably would have been unthinkable in any Western nation, just like when tuition fees increased in the UK, will be met with street protests. Malaysia quiescent, it was greeted by a lackluster debate.

Without any public consultation, obdurate that the Malaysian government has set in stone the deal, it seems.

A cosmetic solution

The main bright spot on Titans beset this nation, is a smokescreen for the fundamental issues. We should have a look at the structural problems in Malaysia.

Bumiputera benefit from affirmative action policies - the land, the Malay race and the other indigenous peoples of Southeast Asia, a term used to denote the children - still endure, almost 40 years ago, introduced in 1970, though.

Is still pervasive racial inequality in terms of wealth? A home school - a bastion of segregation - is alive and well. the civil service is bloated with one ethnic group. Awarded on the basis of their ethnic unscrupulous secondary students are places in local universities.

Against this backdrop, the implementation of Titans is a mockery of all the ethnic problems faced by Malaysia. What is taught in the classroom is not compatible with the reality of life.

Instead of sticking to the knife still has the support that we are trying to start a discourse on the problems, we feel they should cover each student is forced. Real understanding comes only trying to solve the structural problems.

The course is to be based on compulsion

I was a Malaysian public university law school, I was exposed to Titans. Of course, there was a written examination, which lasted for two hours each week. As with any compulsory course, the failure to pass on to you could not graduate. Titans will be revamped for the new exam, I hear that. I hated the course and still do - which is why I'm writing this article.

The problem with the 'other' cultures plunges essentialisms about the content, it is not. As a student, I had the autonomy to destroy any less because I hated it.

TITAS who want to learn more about Islamic and Asian civilizations, a person can do on their own will be optional, are presented as if I do not mind. But to the adult students who are close to insult our intelligence.

Let's start with TITAS offer students minimal utility. They want to get a job, because it is the main reason why students in higher education. Collect the skills needed to market them to the university. Islamic and Asian civilizations, knowledge of the Large Hadrons Collider at CERN have no idea how to help.

TITAS encourages intercultural understanding rather than argument, of course, are made in good faith. Who in the peaceful coexistence of all ethnic groups can live in a more harmonious Malaysia, does not want to?

Timeless as the saying goes; the road to hell is paved with good intentions. We look at this objective, the means to achieve their goals, but the only thing you need. In this case means - coercion - is undesirable.

When I start shoving things down people's throats, you will not achieve the desired goal, I believe. In fact, the opposite is true. University student’s protest as it is guided by a shepherd and sheep are not stupid not to trot along.

In a weak weapon: Everyday forms of resistance, under James Scott (villagers), the dominants (bourgeoisie) postulated that it does not accept what feeds them. Students are forced to attend a course; they did not choose not to ask. They need to resist the subtle ways.

People will be able to drag their feet dreaded TITAS class. Students will trivialize and ridicule the subject. Bored to pass the time in the classroom, students will not consider it appropriate to focus on what is taught in them. It just seems like the theme itself down by devaluation and students will tell you that.

I know I did.

Formally, for sure, 100% Titans students’ learn society that will be able to celebrate. However, the number of people internalizing what you learn will be minimal. Even got it just will not do it, and now the time for the exam, they will forget about it. You learn over time how much erosion there's no incentive to keep track of what you learn.

As children, they're forced to learn a thing as a treatment for university students. Please. in fact, we have a certain degree of respect for the students with the opportunity to choose what you want and need to learn them.

Quo Malaysia, Vadis?

I strongly authoritarian state only need to play a supervisory role and the public believe that. An intimate understanding of a top-down approach to a bottom-up and coming. Campaigns, optional courses and inter-ethnic dialogue, are the catalysts for greater understanding. It is not mandatory.

They are considered the best for their students are given the freedom to teach what the University of the West precisely because we are in the world ranking. It reached the top 50 in the world ranking universities in Malaysia is no wonder that it is.

University may not be the best time in any individual's life. Mar that they do not want to disrespect you.
